1942 is the year, today is the day, and a man pressed play in a BBC studio on a brand new radio show called Desert Island Discs, which is the worlds longest running factual radio programme.
The format is nice and simple – a famous person chooses their eight favourite pieces of music, a luxury item and a book with which they are cast away. To date, over 22 thousand discs have been chosen, with the most popular being Beethoven’s 9th symphony, although Mozart is the most requested composer.
