Book Review: Soul Keeping by John Ortberg

Soul KeepingNow this review is special as I had the privilege of getting an advance copy of the book from Zondervan which is published today (22nd April)

Here is stolen blurb from anywhere that sells the book :

Many people think that the “soul” is a theologically abstract subject. But Jesus said it’s worth more than the world! With Ortberg’s signature insight, inspiration, and wit, you’ll rediscover your soul and how to care for it. Making a challenging topic accessible, he’ll help you take your relationship with God to the next level.

Book review: Beautiful Outlaw by John Eldredge

I haven’t reviewed for a while, but I have been reading!  Here’s a fresh one for you

Here is stolen blurb from anywhere that sells the book :

Reading the Gospels without knowing the personality of Jesus is like watching television with the sound turned off. The result is a dry, two dimensional person doing strange, undecipherable things.

A slight change of direction

At the start of the year I boldly declared that my 2 goals for 2014 are to plank for 5 minutes straight and blog at least once a week.

Well.

The planking started strong. With encouragement I made it up to about 4 minutes, which is fantastic effort, but I sadly sustained an injury that meant I had to stop or else be really badly hurt. I still haven’t picked it up again, but I have time, so I’m not worried.

The blogging. Started well but very quickly stopped. And I refuse to feel guilty about it for this reason – I have discovered I am creative.

When I think back to why this all started, it was primarily as an outlet for my inner monologue rants and to Give My Opinion. I think I’ve done what I set out to do and thus fulfilled the purpose of this blog. Which is nice. What that idea mean though is that now this space is at a bit of a loose end.

What do I do with it?

Well, I’ll still read and review books and anything else I fancy reviewing. I’ll still join in with the weekly photo challenge and still share random yet amusing photos. So it won’t be entirely redundant.

But see, I am doing a New Thing.

My goal to blog has been revised a little as I am now on a voyage of creative discovery to find my niche and groove.

My new second goal is to develop a set of tools and behaviours to help me be creative in my unique setting of being a deliverer of technical construction documents with a bit of teaching thrown in for fun.

To that end, I am not being lazy. I have set up twitter, email, blog and Facebook accounts for a thing I call The Bubble, which is my more creative face. I’ll use this to explore being creative; learning new skills via practice and TED talks, working to link with other creative types and then putting it all into practice both at work and at home. I’m also on Instagram and Pinterest which are both excellent resources for inspiration and building community.

Please don’t lament the passing of the rant, I’m sure they will pop up every now and then, but please do join me on my journey of discovery if you too are so inclined.

2013 in tweets

Herewith are 10 of my favourite tweets from last year – they kind of sum up the year nicely for me in an odd sort of way:

tweet 07 tweet 08 tweet 09 tweet 10 tweet 06tweet 02 tweet 03 tweet 01tweet 05

Obviously more than this happened to me, such as flying to India for about 4 days for work, camping with Church youth, holiday, spiritual transformation, promotion, flu, Christmas, birthdays etc etc – this is just a tiny glimpse into my brain.

If you find that appealing, then why not come along for the ride and follow a link below!
